RESOURCE BINDERS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST WHILE SUPPLIES LAST

In 2007 the AAI produced 23 three-inch binders of asthma resources and materials for the Indianapolis Public Libraries. After getting permission to place the binders in the libraries the library board decided that people in the community are not looking for this type of resource People use the internet. There are about 17 binders left that would be useful to schools, community groups, etc. Please let Robin know if you would like one. Keep in mind that some items may not be up to date but most items are still useful. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

2011 CME TASK FORCE

Even though the AAI was not a recipient of the grant awards at ISDH we would still like to continue our plans for the May Annual Meeting and CME event. Since we did not get the funding for coalition building we need help from our members and interested organizations. We originally planned to have a luncheon with awards and recognition to our members. Please contact Debbie Koehl, Task Force Leader for this project. AROUND THE ROOM

Deb Koeberlein

Attending 1st AAI meeting today for Clarian Pulmonary. Looking forward to working with coalition.

The Clarian Pulmonary Program was featured in an article in
the August addition of AARC.

Jodi Perras

Reported on a case study in Pike Township Schools eliminating pesticides. Study was done with assistance from CDC/ ISDH. This information will be shared. Article on their website @www.ikecoalition.org

Public ally from America will be working with IKE from September through June. Ashley Simms. She may be attending the AAI meetings.

Smart Schools Don’t Idle program has been updated. There is a program curriculum for schools. Signs, commitment forms are available upon request

Lead Safe and Healthy Homes Conference is November 3-4, 2010. Registration will be available on their website. There is an asthma component to this annual conference.

Margaret Rabe

Last week to roll out the Fly a Flag Program to Indiana schools. 100 emails went out. A very positive response to program. This is also funded by ALA-I.

Lisa Cauldwell

Making environmental visits to schools. Finding issues with mold in A/C units. Ventilation issues.

School environments are taking a hit with the budget cuts. We may see more issues with asthma related to school environment.

EPA Tools for Schools is hard to promote to schools as an entire program. Pieces of the program are useful to schools for some issues but it is very time consuming and cost for remediation is an issue.

Robin Costley

Thank you to Midwise for their organizational membership.

New health fair items have been sent to print. A drawing of the new backdrop was shared with the group.

New pig lungs have been purchased for community outreach. We now have the dual rack so that both the healthy lungs and the smokers lungs can be displayed at the same time. Anyone needing to borrow they are available by reserving them for your outreach activities.

Magnets are also being purchased with asthma management information and contact number for AAI program. The grand prize winner of this years poster contest was chosen for the artwork. “Learn About Asthma”

Annual report on the AAI’s services and accomplishments is going to be developed later this year. The MCHD epidemiology department is assisting with some current and pertinent local data to be included in the report.

Data being collected on ED asthma cases by date since July 1, 2010.  Knozone is being marketed by Hirons & Company and the data is being collected to match with Knozone Action Days.  The cases are tracked daily by hospital, age and gender.  Results will be compiled and shared.

NEXT MEETING WILL BE TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2010 AT MCHD 1ST FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM FROM 8-9:30AM.

2010 World Asthma Day Poster Winner

Asthma is a chronic condition affecting an estimated 24 million Americans, with an
alarming 55% increase in the death rate over the last 20 years.  The World Asthma Day
Celebration and poster contest is designed to generate  public awareness for asthma and
its terrible consequences if not treated properly.  Children ages five to fourteen entered
their artwork.  The posters were up for display and judged at the Peyton Manning Children's
Hospital at St.Vincent for two weeks in early April.

The Annual World Asthma Day event occurred on Saturday, April 24th in the lobby of the
Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, located at 2001 W. 86th Street.   Our grand
prizewinner's poster will be displayed on a billboard in their neighborhood donated by Clear
Channel Communications, Inc.  Artwork is also used to help educate the community about
asthma through a child's eyes on presentations, t-shirts, note cards, and more.

The Asthma Alliance of Indianapolis was pleased to present the 2010 World Asthma Day
Poster Contest winners.  All winners received a savings bond and certificate of their
accomplishment.
