  Head Start:

·       Head Start is growing in the Indianapolis area.  There will be 15 sites in the 2010-2011 school year.  There has been an early Head Start expansion adding 72 children to the Early Head Start Program.  Decatur Township will be a new center taking children ages 6 weeks to 3 years.  Addressing the lack of Early Head Start services on the south side.  Noblesville will have some home visit days added and have 4 pregnant Mom's.  Southeast Center will have 100 children in a 4 day per week home based service.    The AAI will provide the 15 centers with continued staff education, promotion of the asthma action plans, support management, home visits for environmental control and parent education in the fall.  The preschool workshop with "Randy" is going to be promoted as able in each center's classrooms.

Asthma Friendly Schools Initiative:

  • Grant is wrapping up at the end of August 2010.  AAI and MCHD are committed to continue to serve the Perry Township schools.  Working with appointed asthma person at Perry, Diana Bauman, RN at Perry Meridian High School.
  • Perry is very interested in expanding the "Fly a Flag for Clean Air Program" to other schools.  Douglas MacArthur school pilot program proved to be a great success.  Anthem and American Lung Association are supporting funding to expand this program to other schools in Indiana.  Margaret Rabe, Asthma Program Enviornment @ ISDH   will be promoting and helping additional schools  launch this great program.
  • MSD PT invited the AAI team to the wellness initiative that they will begin the first of the new school year.  Should be great opportunities to partner and reach our goals and objectives in this grant.
  •        MDwise is sponsoring the 2nd  Healthy Hoops Program at Conseco FieldhouseInitiative again  on August 5, 2010.  Searching for AAI volunteers for the Healthy Hoops event organized by Kelly Henderson, PharmD @ MDwise.  Timeline is to bring this event to Indiana by the end of August 2009.  This program has succeeded and is popular in other states.  AAI’s role would be to help staff the event making it an opportunity for free media attention for our coalition.  Plans are still underway, registration forms are in the works.
