  • ISDH is coordinating the coach’s clipboards and trying to do a press release to help with promotion.  Janet suggested contacting the Band directors & Football players via parent booster clubs for promotion.
  • 2009 World Asthma Day:  Danette took time to thank the supporters & Robin Costley of WAD by handing out 5 X 7 picture framed wining poster for 2009.
  •  It was agreed up on that World Asthma Day be held at the same location for 2010 and the plans are for the last week in April.
  •  Poster winner bill board in Beech Grove at 1st & Alton and is facing the south.
  • It was suggested to make changes to voting online for future posters for WAD, that will be looked into and suggestions went around the room.

 Committees:

  •        Suggestions went around the room to get more commitments to help with committees.  It was suggested that AAI form a task force for the activities of the AAI.  That way there is a beginning and an end to the member commitment for each project.   There was a vote &, it was agreed that the AAI meetings will be restructured to split the bi –monthly meetings into two parts.  The 1st 45 minutes will be for the committees to meet allowing each member to be involved in whatever project interests them.  The lst 45 minutes will be a full membership meeting with reports from the different committees.  The meeting room will be divided into “pods” and then merge together for the last 45 minutes.  We have always prided ourselves on keeping within the 1.5-hour time limit.   We will continue to strive for staying within our limit.  So, members would only be encouraged to attend 6 total meetings a year and this will include the committee work as well.    There may be some restructuring of the four of committees.  Current Chair, Danette Fariss, future Chair, Debbie Koehl and manager Robin Costley will work on new governance plan.  Debbie Koehl will send information out once the guidelines are established.
  • Next meeting we will discuss the governance changes and request for members to become Chairs for each committee.  Please take some time to think about giving AAI 2-4 hours per month.  Perhaps your employer would be willing to allow you this small amount of time to help with AAI initiatives?

 InJAC:

  •   June 18 is next meeting sharing evaluation progress on state plan.
  • CDC grant proposal has been submitted for the next 5-year plan.  Should hear about funding in August.
  •        Grant includes new employees to program.  1- full time for evaluating the plan, 1- Full time environment focus
  •        Child & Youth workgroup is working with childcare providers, training via FSSA Childcare Health Consultants.  There will be poster, literature and promotional items with explanation on what an asthma attack is and explanation on bleach bottle cleaning supplies used around kids with asthma.  The promotion has been thru the existing FSSA program, but it was suggested that promotion on the InJAC & AAI websites might be a good source of promotion as well.

 Head Start:

·       Robin reports that there are currently 11 centers providing continued staff education, promotion of the asthma action plans, and parent education in the fall.

Asthma Friendly Schools Initiative:

  • Marsha Hughes Gay has prepared a detailed plan of our logic model with scientifically based evidence for each objective included in the content.  AFSI “task force” will review and comment for final draft.
  • MSD PT invited the AAI team to the wellness initiative that they will begin the first of the new school year.  Should be great opportunities to partner and reach our goals and objectives in this grant.

l Around the room:

Danette Fariss, Chair   Peyton Manning Children's Hospit

  •        Searching for AAI volunteers for the Healthy Hoops event organized by Kelly Henderson, PharmD @ MDwise.  Timeline is to bring this event to Indiana by the end of August 2009.  This program has succeeded and is popular in other states.  AAI’s role would be to help staff the event making it an opportunity for free media attention for our coalition.  If AAI agrees to volunteer the AAI logo will be included on items, such as T-shirts, basketballs and literature.  Kelly Henderson is the main contact for this project.  The event is scheduled to be held at Conseco Field House.  Plans are still underway, registration forms are in the works.

Janet McCabe, Improving Kids Environment

·       Look for invites to a 10-year celebration/ fundraiser for IKE on November 3, 2009.

  •        Indiana Lead Safe and Healthy Homes conference is schedule to take place at the Marten House on November 4th & 5th.  More information to follow.
  •        Continuing the work on the Smart Schools Don’t Idle program.  With grant able to reach 57 schools and will continue to promote in the new school year.

Marie Salemi, Astrazeneca

  •        Has agreed to sponsor our evening meeting/ dinner on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 @ 6:00 pm.   Location TBA, but invites will be going out.  It was suggested that the membership information for AAI be announced during this dinner.  Please invite potential members or interested parties.

Monica Dick, City of Indianapolis, Knozone Program

  • Introduced the Knozone program.  Many activities on the horizon to hopefully collaborate with AAI.
  • Shared tools used for promotion.  Knozone will be looking for volunteers to staff health fairs, but may be able to provide free Pacers/Fever tickets to those volunteers.  There are scheduled media events with the Mayor in hopes to promote program.

Robin Costley, AAI, MCHD

  • Has formed a team for the ALA Lung Walk Saturday.  There are 6 walkers and the team has raised $125.00.  If you would like to contribute to this cause, please do so on the ALA website http://www.lungusa.org/site/pp.asp?c=dvLUK9O0E&b=37465
  •  Jamie Lee will be our volunteer at our booth at the event.
  • Don’t forget about the tool kit items on the website for recruitment and funding opportunities.  You can tailor the power points and handouts to include information about your own organizations.

l Jamie Lee wanted to thank Danette for all her hard work over the last two years.  She put her heart and soul into the AAI during her time as Chair.  Great Job Danette from the entire group!  Round of applause!
