Total of ten funded sites nationally
The American Lung Association (National Program Office) was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC DASH) to build the capacity of local schools and school districts to implement a comprehensive asthma management program.
· American Association of School Administrators (AASA) was other org. funded
The Asthma-Friendly Schools Initiative (AFSI) is a community approach to asthma allowing the schools and local asthma collaboratives to work together to provide asthma management. This reduces the burden on the schools and allows the community to utilize its resources while limiting duplication of efforts. Comprehensive asthma management in schools is defined by the AFSI as a coordinated approach that includes four major components:
· Access to school health services
· Student and staff education
· A healthy school environment
· Appropriate physical education/activity program
AFSI consists of tools, resources, and processes, which are designed to be customized to each local community. The attached logic model provides an indication of the activities and outputs each community collaborative will be expected to complete during the four-years. Each grantee is required to address a minimum of three of the long-term outcomes (communication of success stories is required).
